Hello from Vienna, Austria

Hello from Vienna!

Bon Voyage!

After an 8 hour flight from Toronto, we arrived in the beautiful city of Vienna for our layover. With almost 12 hours to kill before our flight to Bangkok, we decided it was best to get out and explore the city. Exhausted from the flight filled with screaming and crying children which left us with hardly any sleep, we ventured out of the airport on the City Airport Train to Vienna's city centre.

I have always wanted to travel to Vienna since my grandmother was born here! After sampling the Weiner Schnitzel, It is now very clear that a large majority of my family's culture and cooking can be traced back to these Austrian roots.

Yummy gelato!

We had an amazing day exploring Stephansplatz, the Stadtpark and shopping along Graben Street just to name a few.

Back at the airport, we now await our next flight to Bangkok, which will be roughly 10 hours long. We hope to get more sleep on this flight, cross your fingers for us there are no more crying babies.

The Final Countdown

To answer your first question, yes, you should be hearing this song in your head "Final Countdown". Your second question is probably, "countdown to what? and how does that man have such amazing hair?" Well, TODAY IS THE DAY!! Today is the day we fly to Thailand! To be more clear, tonight is the night we fly to Vienna, Austria, and THEN to Thailand!

We chose a night flight in hopes that we will get some sleep. We have a very long layover in which we will be taking in the sights in Vienna. Stay tuned for our Vienna blog post to see what we were up to!

Packing was definitely stressful, and I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say I feel like I'm forgetting something. I decided to go with a 60L backpack and a 17L carryon daypack. This was plenty of room for me, but it is still pretty squishy! Below is a picture of the pack I chose from MEC. I also picked up a very handy Lonely Planet Thai phrasebook and dictionary. I am certain I will be needing it!

Wish us luck with all of our flights, and hope to be writing again soon!

FAQs... Frequently Asking Questions

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m pretty new at this… and I’m not just talking about blogging! Yes, I have travelled. I have been on a whirlwind trip through parts of Europe, parts of the US, and on a luxurious vacation. None of these experiences have been anything like this! Our team has been brainstorming this trip since our first year of vet school.

For those who don’t know, Global Vets is a veterinary student initiative that takes place in the summer between 2nd and 3rd year of the DVM program. Students form groups of 2-4 and submit a detailed application for their top 3 countries and projects of interest. We generally choose locations that students have visited in the past, but it is not necessary.  After our long application and interview process we were accepted for the opportunity of a lifetime! Our team was chosen to travel to Thailand, our top pick!

We have asked many questions in the past 8 months, big questions and little questions. Questions like:
·      “What country should we go to and when?”
·      “What projects would we most like to contribute to?”
·      “What size of backpack do I need?”
·      “How many Bahts in a dollar, how many dollars in a Baht. How many Bahts is this many dollars…”
·      “Wait, HOW MUCH is Japanese Encephalitis vaccine??”
·      “How am I going to pack for 7 weeks in one backpack??”
·      And the big one, “How am I going to pay for this?”

We have been very supportive of each other’s questions and suggestions. That is the beauty of planning a trip like this with your best friends. We may not have always agreed with the best ways to plan our time, but we heard each other out and made decisions as a group. We are now two weeks away from our departure date, and the packing panic has begun. I ask myself a thousand times a day if I have the right things and if I am forgetting anything important.

One thing I know for sure is that this is going to be the adventure of a lifetime. That is if I survive the anxiety of waiting the next two weeks!

Until next time..

  • p.s. how do you guys deal with pre-departure anxiety? Have you ever done a trip like this?
